What’s The Difference Between Electric Arc Furnace And Intermediate Frequency Furnace?

In the realm of steelmaking, there are two different types of electric furnaces: electric arc furnaces and medium frequency furnaces.
Despite some similarities, they have distinct differences based on their principles, classifications, and advantages.

By utilizing an electric arc furnace is capable of producing high-temperature melting of metals and ores.
Compared to other steelmaking furnace methods, this process is more versatile in that it can eliminate impurities like sulfur and phosphorus while providing easy control over the furnace’s temperature.
Additionally, electric arc furnaces occupy a smaller area and are suitable for melting high-quality alloy steel. 

On the other hand, a medium frequency furnace transforms 50Hz AC power into medium frequency, which is above 300Hz to 1000Hz, and supplies medium-frequency alternating current flowing through capacitors and induction coils to generate high-density magnetic lines in the induction coil. It produces a large eddy current in the metal material.

Electric arc furnaces can be classified in several ways, including self-consumable and non-self-consumable electric arc furnaces.
They are also classified based on the control method of arc length and the operating and furnace structure form.

In contrast, the medium frequency furnace has only one classification based on its tonnage.

Electric arc furnaces have several advantages, such as requiring less investment and occupying a small area. They have a short process flow, simple equipment, and are easy to operate, making them relatively easy to control pollution. Furthermore, electric arc furnaces possess strong versatility in terms of furnace materials and can effectively utilize scrap steel as their principal raw material.

They can also use various elements for alloying, producing various high-quality steels and alloy steels.

The medium frequency furnace:
1.Characterized by rapid heating, high production efficiency, and minimal oxidation and decarburization.

2.It saves materials and costs and prolongs the life of molds. It offers a superior working environment with low pollution and energy consumption.

3.The furnace provides even heating, minimal temperature variation between the core and surface, and precise temperature control.

In summary, while both electric arc furnaces and medium frequency furnaces are used in steelmaking, they have differences in their principles, classifications, and advantages. Understanding these differences is essential in choosing the appropriate furnace for a specific steelmaking process.
